Blessed Assurance, Our God is an Awesome God! I have had the great priviledge to be part of planting a church. We had a lot of discussion as to what our music would be like. We took into account that we are a multi-cultural, multi-lingual, and diversely generational (oldest is in 90's and youngest is just a few months)congretation. We have also been blessed with a lot of musically gifted people. We decided to employ all styles, although we haven't had the "hard rock" style. We have the Youth 4 Christ worship team and they sing contemporary. We have For His Glory worship team and they sing contemporary and traditional--with the organ! We have New Life worship team and they sing mostly contemporary and some contemporized hymns (Power in the Blood, being one of my favorites). We had a group that sang only traditional hymns. This particular group would also sing at least one hymn in a very unique way, using one of the languages we have in our church (Samoan, Spanish, Philipino, Sign Language).

I believe God loves music and I think He loves to be praised with all kinds of music. (Why else would we be so blessed with musical talents in the Christian world?) Just like we would be bored listening to one song from now until eternity, I believe God loves a variety in the music we praise Him with. As long as it is done with a joyful, praising, worshipful spirit, let 'er rip! ;-)

Also, you may want to let people know through a bulletin insert to give you feed back on songs that are sung in the service. Ask for your congregation's prayerful and Spirit-led input to get an idea of what lifts them up and what doesn't. I've experienced situations where a handful of people decided for the whole what was appropriate and what was not and it just about choked the joy out of worship.

There are some really good Christian artists to listen to and get some ideas of what can be done as well. One of my current favorites is Selah. Try their Greatest Hymns CD. It is awesome!

God bless and lead you in making a joyful noise!

I would have to agree that contemporary songs can be very uplifting in service. While I would steer clear of the rock music versions of hymns or contemporary music I know that I have been blessed by contemporary music. Some of the old hymns can't be beat, though and the stories behind them show they are inspired, too. Like the Amazing Grace hymn story. Some hymns have 'archaic' words but the message is still obvious. I think there needs to be a blend of contemporary and the good ol' hymns. Both have been inspired and can lead us closer to Christ.

Since I became director of music at the church I attend, I have been bombarded from all sides...."let's sing just the old hymns" "we need to learn the contemporary songs". As you can see by the age group I'm in, I should agree w/singing the old hymns. BUT I really like some of the new songs (not the repetitive and ear-deafening songs). The words lend more to today's theme in the church.....more about our relationship with God than the legalistic jargon of "does and don'ts" and "I'm just a worm". I would like a blend of both types. What is your experience with this controverial subject?
